PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
||||||||
Dear Members: As you read this, I hope most of you have already made your plans to attend Microscopy and Microanalysis 96 in Minneapolis. This is the first meeting in our long-term joint sponsorship with MSA, as well as with other societies, of the Microscopy and Microanalysis national meeting. I think you will find that the scientific program (guided by Joe Michael as MAS program chair and Jon McCarthy as MAS program co-chair), the commercial exhibition, and the location to all be outstanding. As you make these plans, please take special note of two events: First, on Saturday, August 10, 1996 the first MAS Topical Conference will be held in conjunction with the Microscopy and Microanalysis 96 meeting. This Topical Conference has been organized by John Mansfield and will discuss the Resources on the World Wide Web for Microscopy and Microanalysis. Attendance is free for MAS members and complete registration information is found elsewhere in this edition of MicroNews. Second, on Wednesday, August 14, the 4:00 PM MAS business meeting and awards ceremony will be followed by a reception, hosted by MAS, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM for all MAS members and the awardees. This MAS reception will precede the Evening Dinner Cruise on the Mississippi and you are encouraged to join all meeting attendees on the boat cruise. (tickets required). Also, as you know from previous issues of MicroNews, the Journal of Microbeam Analysis has now been incorporated into the Journal of the Microscopy Society of America and Charles Lyman of Lehigh University is MAS Associate Editor of JMSA. I encourage you in general to consider this publishing opportunity for your research results and, in particular, for expanded publications of results presented in Minneapolis. Finally as the MAS council continues to explore the most effective ways for the Society to be of service to its members, the future role and nature of MAS topical conferences is an important item of discussion. I invite you to share your thoughts with me and members of the |

MAS MEMBERSHIP
Membership services would like to thank each and every MAS member who has managed to stay on the membership rolls through the last few years. The truth is that many of our friends and co-workers were not so lucky and have been lost from the rolls through no fault of their own. Constant difficulties with the journal publisher have made it difficult for many to keep their membership active. Now that Bill Thompson is back as accountant and dues collector, I am confident that there will be more stability in the rolls. I would like to enlist the assistance of all MAS members to bring back the lost members and find new members. Please copy the membership application found elsewhere in MicroNews and pass it on to friends, your local meeting, post it on your laboratory bulletin board, and mail/fax it to co-workers across town and overseas. If you would like a stack of applications to take to a meeting, conference, or course let me know and I will get them to you. Get the word out and pass it around that the old application found in the back of the journal should NOT be used - only use the application in 1996 and later MicroNews. Further information about membership can be found on the world wide web at "http://www.microbeamanalysis.org" I can be reached by email at "scott.wight@nist.gov" or by phone at 800-4MASMEM. |

MAS Council Nominations
Every year, a slate of nominations for two MAS council directors and MAS officers is proposed by the nominations committee for approval by council and the members at the summer business meeting. The nominations committee is made up of the President Elect (Joe Michael) and the two newest council directors (Greg Meeker and Rich Linton). This year the committee has been expanded to include Paul Hlava, Chairman of the MAS Tour Speaker Program, and Ryna Marinenko, MicroNews Editor. A third person will be appointed to the committee. Since the committee is not familiar with all members of MAS and their contributions, the committee is soliciting the membership and local affiliated societies for suggestions of persons who should be on a nominations list for council directors. If you have any suggestions, please send the name, professional affiliation, background, and a statement describing the contributions of the individual to the local affiliated society and/or to MAS. The individual must be an MAS member and should be able to attend the winter and summer council meeting. Send nominations to Joe Michael by July 31, l996. Phone 505-844-9115 FAX 505-844-2974 email: jrmicha@sandia.gov |

MAS Tour Speaker Program 1995-6
This year MAS has sent a tour speaker to 10 affiliated societies and 3 more visits are scheduled for the fall. This means that 13 of the 22 societies affiliated with MAS will get tour speakers this year. We would have had quite a few more except for an unusual frequency of conflicts. (If we didn't pick top people for tour speakers, they would be more available but then why bother.) We actually had 3 societies requesting speakers for May 9, 1996 and all of our speakers had other commitments. This year was special. We sponsored a tour speaker to our Australian affiliate in honor of their 14th Australian Conference on Electron Microscopy (ACEM-14) and 1st meeting of the International Union of Microbeam Analysis (IUMAS). |
||||
I want to remind the MAS representatives of all the affiliated societies that we will meet at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996 in Minneapolis to pick the tour speakers for 1996-1997. If you have suggestions, contact me so I can plan ahead. In addition, I will soon be sending each society a copy of the "Guidelines for Regional Societies Affiliated with The National Microbeam Analysis Society" and this ARS meeting in Minneapolis would be an appropriate forum for any questions/discussions on that topic. With MAS picking up the tab for lunch, I expect every society to be represented. I will be sending email to the appropriate people about a month before the meeting. If you cannot attend, please designate an alternative representative at that time. Please be sure to notify me when there is a change in the contact person for your affiliated society.
See You in Minneapolis!

Chuck Fiori Memorial Fund
Some of us remember him whenever we pour liquid nitrogen. (Who can forget the sight of him gargling a mouthful of liquid N2?) Some of us remember him when we hear a particular kind of verrrry funny joke. (His son is the keeper of that little brown book of keywords. ) Some of us remember him when DTSA crashes catastrophically, and we swear that an evil little chuckle can be heard coming from somewhere down below. A lot of us remember him when we recognize a spectrum artifact or an unexpected absorption phenomena or any of a zillion other points that result in a good analysis because we learned 'how to' from him. It is this Chuck Fiori persona, Teacher, with his inimitable presentations at professional society meetings and lectures at the Lehigh University Short Courses, that the Microbeam Analysis Society commemorates with the Chuck Fiori Memorial Fund. The Fund was established in 1993 to support an MAS Tour Speaker on a topic of broad interest presented at a tutorial level. MAS Treasurer Harvey Freeman accepts checks at 958 Long Pond Road Brewster, MA 02631-1898 Remember Chuck in a way that is near and dear to his heart. C. Swyt Thomas |
